Hi, everyone

I'm scratching my head about why Venus is considered an evil planet for Scorpio rising in terms of Yoga Karakas. In the video about Scorpio Ernst says that Venus is the second lord, which is not the case. As the 7th and 12th lord, Venus should be more of a yoga booster. That seems more logical to me, but maybe I'm just nuts, LOL! I am confused and I hope someone can clear things up for me.

You are correct, Venus rules the 7th and 12th. To my knowledge, planets that rule angles are not auspicious--at best Neutral. And the 12th is not an auspicious house, either.

As Parashara says:

“Venus, Mercury and Saturn are evil, auspicious are Jupiter and the Moon, the Sun and Moon are Yogakarakas. Mars is neutral, and Venus and the other evil have Maraka qualities. Thus the effects are known for the Scorpio rising born.”

[p. 42-43, Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Yogakarakas, 35-36]

Ernst states in the first Rasi Sutras audio course that, if Venus is strong, relationships cause problems for Scorpio Lagnas.

Yes, and the 12th lordship would make Venus an associative planet. So if Venus joins Mars in some Rasi, that would be a yoga producing combo. Maybe even a better one if they join in a trine.

@astroalex I am not sure what you mean by "associative", here. I am going by what Parashara says--he calls Venus "evil". And Ernst's qualifications in the first Rasi Sutras course. Since Parashara calls Venus "evil", it is not possible for Venus to be auspicious in any way, shape or form.

However, I seem to remember Ernst adding some nuance with respect to distinguishing "auspicious" and "productive". Evil planets can give things that may be or seem desirable, but they are entirely at odds with the purpose and path of the ascendant in question. According to Ernst, the goal or major issue of the Scorpio Lagna is survival. The auspicious planets--Jupiter (2nd and 5th) and Moon (9th)--show things that can survive past the life of the body. Children (5th) and philosophy (9th).

@astroalex if you mean raja yogas, that requires lordship of an angle and a trine, not an angle and a dussthan (12).

Hi all,

Venus ruling the 7th, it becomes a maraka (death inflicting planet). thats why it is considered evil

Hey Alex, yes benefic planets ruling angles are not auspicious. Just look to Jupiter for Gemini rising. Rulership of the 12th is not auspicious either. For Scorpio rising, Venus will give relationships that can drain or lead to losses/expenses. Venus as 7th and 12th lord can give loss of vitality through excessive bedroom pleasures, masturbation etc. Loss of spouse is also a possibility here. The 7th is a maraka house and the 12th house too has some implications of death. Addictions are another option since the 12th house rules escape. A better way to escape is through spiritual practice/seclusion. All in all, definitely not a good planet for Vrischika, especially when it's combust in Leo (like in my chart haha)!
