In vedic astrology do aspects have the same meaning as they do in western astrology? Typically in vedic astrology aspects are not clearly called out as square, trine, opposition or conjucntion. So in the letures I am a little confused what to understand when the word 'aspect' is used.

it´s a little hard to give a short answer, since there are actually three types of aspects, each with a different meaning, or rather they apply in different situations. This is thouroughly presented in the Jyotish building blocks course I believe.
