Maybe Varuna's vehicle, Makara, was a dolphin. A highly evolved and conscious creature.

It many ways it would make sense to have it as a dolphin, but the idea is a more violent creature thus the shark or crocodile.

Varuna human here, been driving since 1989. What  I've "needed" my car to do, to feel good psychologically about driving it.  I've "needed" it to accelerate fast.  I don't really speed, been told even that I drive " like a granny" by more than one friend, but my car must get up to speed quickly, or I won't keep it.  I typically outpace others from zero to 40ish, but then I chill out.  Stay with the pack in big city traffic but want to be far away from it as much as possible.  Is this shark- like? I don't know how a shark moves. ?  I can tell you with my 4th Lord ( Mercury) conjunct Venus in the 12th along with Saturn and the sun, I always purchase a slightly used car, tend to drive it years and years, it's typically a nicer ( but not ridiculously so- think turbo Volvo all loaded up in the 90's and Acura RDX right now) car, and I end up quickly acquiring a dent or three I never bother to have taken out.  I think that's more planetary influence though. That turbo Volvo was an 85, black with leather interior.  It was kind of a crocodile, it could suddenly move very fast, but rather toiled along.  My current Acura is, interestingly the color or a shark.  It's silver-blue, smoky colored. in the past, I've also driven for many years a silver Acura Integra, and for a shorter time a silver Mitsubishi Eclipse.  If silver is shark colored, that's what I've driven.  🤔

I can see now, pondering the word "makara", that the very sound of that word implies something with some viciousness to it. Some teeth.

I would  bet it would be the shark but purely intuition based. Because I have drowned Pisces as a shark in my videos, and I didn't know about Varuna back then. But maybe it's more than one shape. I used to love Water pokemon in my Pokémon games, I would always train a leviathan. I wasn't a fan of crocodile at all. Shark yes, I liked them. Aren't we supposed to like the animal if we have the Adityas strong? I can't say I'm a fan of the crocodile but maybe that's my Rahu in Capricorn 🤣
