Someone asked today why the time of birth is decisive for a chart and not the time of procreation. I found that a good question. Does Anybody has an answer to it?

Hello. In this article ( https://shyamasundaradasa.com/jyotish/resources/q&a/birth_time.html) this is mentioned:

"About 25 years ago I read an article in the Astrological Magazine that clearly defined the time of birth as "bhu patana" or when the child touched the earth. In Satya Jatakam (1.6), Satyacharya writes that there are three moments which can be taken as birth time:

1) Adhana lagna the moment of conception

2) Siro darshana lagna when the head becomes visible

3) Bhu patana lagna when the body touches the earth

Satyacarya goes on to state that the first two moments are hard to ascertain and that one should, therefore, take the third one only.

The moment of conception is hard to ascertain because even if one knows the exact moment that the seed was deposited in the womb that is not the moment of conception because it takes some time for the sperm to find the ovum; it could take hours and sometimes even a day or two, because the sperm can live from 3-5 days inside the woman's body."

There are also other views which are also mentioned in the article, I just copied that which is relevant to the question.

I personaly think its hard enough to even have the regular correct birth time and  to to even find the right method to determine that since there are different opinions what to speak then of the time of conception.

Kind regards

@narottama , thank you for the insight- a source to investigate more! From the practical point of view it is more than understandable why the time of when "the body touches the earth" is taken for defining the chart. I was just curious about which of these moments would be more crucial than the other, "objectively"...

You are welcome and I understand what you write. Somewhere I have also read that the time when the baby takes the first breath is taken as the birthtime with the explanation that this is the time when the baby becomes "independent" from the mother int he sense that the baby starts to live of his or her own organs. This made sense to me. Even touching the earth is like, what does it mean, some baby's are born in water and maybe dont touch the earth for weeks or when the child is on a bed, desk or something, does this count as touching the earth? I am not sure but taking its first breath makes sense to me.

@narottama I think "touching the earth" refers in general on touching the outer physical world- so the bed and the water are part of it? The moment the umbilical cord is cut through could be another moment...

Somewhat related - I have the birth time and umbilical cord cut time for both my kids. For my daughter, there was a 45 minute difference between when she "came out" vs when the cord was cut, and it changed her ascendant. I wish I had more charts of people who had both times to compare, but if I see events getting triggered in my daughter's chart that better match her umbilical cord time...well, I'll be pretty convinced...

I think this has been written about in other posts, but from what I remember, the "touching the earth" is not as applicable in the literal sense in modern times because practices parallel to the times in which the original texts where written women tended to give birth in a squatting position and if on their backs or reclining, raised tables would not have been used and so the newborn came in contact with the floor, or earth much sooner than a child would today.  The idea of connecting to the outer world as @TamaraP says seems linked to the essence of the directive.  This "connecting to the outer world" then should be the activating of karmas and karmic results from previous actions as indicated by astrology.

Interesting thing to note, in the classic tales of Siddhartha Gautama, it is said that when he was born he took seven steps on the earth and with each step a lotus appeared under his feet.  This was to signify he would transcend karma and be liberated in that life so this points to a tradition of connecting the earth and the initiation of karmic effects.

Would be interesting for others to weigh in on this but I have found, particularly with Mudda techniques, that when "exact" birth time is known, I still find myself adding typically 30 seconds to a minute and a half of time which more accurately aligns the chart.
