In the old days, elephants were used in some places as judges or for the death penalty.
Were there any astrological parallels or meanings?

Perhaps there's a Ketu connection, since Ketu is associated with Ganesh. So it sounds to me like it could have something to do with being literally crushed by the weight of the karmic load they couldn't get liberated from.
