It might be a stupid beginner question, but I can't understand this idea of Laggitadi Vastas and Deepdadi Vastas. Like, when we use Laggitadi Vastas, we use it in conjunction with Jagrati Vastas. So, let's take Mercury and Venus, for example, since they're also always so close to the Sun. In Laggitadi Vastas, if Sun is conjunct Mercury and Venus, he's gonna agitate them. But, if he is in lower dignities, then it won't have the strength to agitate and hurt those planets. It can only hurt them when it's in Moolatrikona exaltation or good higher dignities. But, in Deepdadi Vastas, it is the opposite. A good Sun exalted in own house won't hurt, but a bad Sun debilitated or enemy-signed will hurt Mercury-Venus verse in Deepdadi Vastas rules. Like, I know that we can use this rule in the context of which Avashta we are using, Like, we can look at it from different rules, but it's still the same chart. So, how do I know if this Sun is hurting these planets or helping these planets and in what context? Because, we can use the different rules, but it's still the same thing that I'm looking at, right? I'm a bit confused between these two how do we know which one to use where and what results will be more concrete or is this contradictory?

Like when mars is conjunct jupiter it's delighting him from laggitadi rules but from deeptadi rules he's impairing it so which one is it? What would be the results good or bad?

@jesuschrist

Which one is it?

Why does it have to be one or the other?

So much in real life is complex and confusing. Things are hardly ever all good or all bad; some of it is good and some of it is bad.

Like when Sun and Mercury are conjunct, the Sun delights Mercury AND the Sun agitates Mercury; it does both. Thus, astrology reflects the real, actual complexity of life.

I'm familiar with the DAs conceptually, but I don't know how to use them, so I can't give a specific answer, but just consider the question in that light. Mars delights Jupiter because he is a friend...but Mars is also a malefic and makes you work for things, so he could also have this effect on certain Jupiter things when conjunct Jupiter.

The real quesiton is, what are DAs for? Avasthas and dignity are to be used in a certain context, so I think you need to understand what exactly the DAs are indicating and what situations require their use in order to really answer your question.

Stupid - or so called stupid - questions are often the best and most clarifying.

Now, this is a complex question and personally i think Ernst will have to answer it. With that said: From where did you get the concept that only a planet in good dignity can hurt a planet LA wise? I´m not familiar with it.

It might that I´m the stupid here. But that I have no problem with.

@jesuschrist Yes, since you said it might be a stupid question. I didn´t think it was.

I haven't been through the all of the LA courses...but there are plenty of examples where Ernst says things like, "Mars is starving Saturn, but Mars is debilitated, so he is sleeping, so he can't really hurt." It sort of makes sense, but also sort of confuses me in terms of not being sure exactly what the principle is and how to apply consistently; then do svapna planets only starve to 1/2?, etc. I was thinking maybe that is what Mr. Christ was referring to?

@j0sh4rp3 Yeah, it´s confusing, I´m not sure Ernst uses those avasthas anymore. Sleeping etc that is.

I can't imagine him not using the jaagradaadi avasthas at all...seems so fundamental, but maybe changed the way or context.

At one point he was determining LAs in all the vargas (i.e., based on the positions in each varga).

Later he stopped doing that. Now I think he only determines LAs in the rashi. However, in some videos, I have seen him qualify the LA based on the jaagradaadi avastha of the planet in a certain varga. Like in the example above where Mars is sleeping in the rashi so he cant hurt Saturn...but in the d9 Mars is exalted so he can starve Saturn in the navamsha.

I see the logic there, but what I'm really curious about is how to see this or that in real people, or in myself...well, actually I should learn more about Mars starving Saturn, because he is starving Saturn by aspect in my chart to about 44 points...but Mars is sleeping in d1 and jaagrat in d9, so I guess I should experiment on myself.

I see it differently,

Ernst mentions at few places that he used to consider it a planet hurts another only when in good dignities, he updated it and doesn't exactly use that principle any more (will let him confirm).

For this question of evaluating, your answer I believe lies in PAC videos 89-94 and understanding different strengths.

A planet hurts its enemy either of 3 levels, depending on its positive strength in that area -

cheshta : active doing strength,

uccha : the strength that is just there, freely available (receiving),

dig : how  well it shifts,

In your example for sun with Mercury :

Cheshta : On the cheshta level, the Sun will help mercury to the extent of its positive cheshta strength and hurt mercury to the extent of its negative chestha strength. The Sun has highest cheshta bala in summer solstice (now Jun 21), so it will help more and hurt Mercury less around this date. So, the Sun will help more and hurt much less much when Gemini/Cancer/Leo compared to when it is in Capricorn/Aq. Also, Mercury could be retrograde as well, which helps mercury further in its own cheshta.

Uccha : On the uccha level, the Sun will help mercury to the extent of its positive uccha strength and hurt mercury to the extent of its negative uccha strength. The sun has highest uccha bala in Aries, so the Sun will help Me more and hurt much less much when Pisces/Aries/Taurus compared to when it is in Virgo/Libra.

Dig : Dig depends on when the person is born, but for Sun, it is generally highest at noon. So the Sun will help Me more and hurt much less much when person is born close to noon/afternoon compared to when it is late night/midnight.

For deeptadi avasthas, I haven't done deep dive but it is about how radiant the planet feels, it is not mathematical, but rather  the graha is operating in a happy environment or a stressful environment ? For ex : Mars in cancer, the person is focusing on making an effort to get what they need, but the circumstances are very stressful, simply opportunities are missing. Venus in virgo, the person is trying to make a connection, but the there are just few opportunities coming their way. On the other hand, Venus in pisces : There are ample opportunities for a give and take connection.

The concrete situation is more of the dignity/deeptadi avastha and how a person is dealing with it is the lajjitadi avastha.

Deeptaadi avasthas have to do with the circumstances. Are the circumstances supportive or not?
