Hi Ernst 

Does combustion of Mars or joining with rahu reduce the effectiveness of gems for the native even if Mars has good shad bala?

it will reduce it as compared if it did not have those, but its still good it has strong shadbala.

Okay, thanks Ernst 

In the shad bala, can we say ucha bala and chest bala of Mars are most important and that if they are good then gems will work relatively effectively?

and dig bala is importnat as well. I would say off the three uccha bala is the most importnat for gem use.

Is that because Ma exaltation is in a earth sign? The environment where gems come from in their Ma process, earth?
