I don't ever touch higher vargas until I figured out the Lg 100%. I think your approach is good. I would start with the COT as well. It helps narrow down the AK situation, Mercury placement and also some cusps.
@mirela Yeah, the only problem is that Mercury is activated in each case; as a AK or as the Lagna Lord and being conjunct a good Sun. So by the end of the day it doesn´t help much with the timing. But as Mona said: there are other things to look at.

@meyes if Mercury gets activated either way, I'd compare some Jaimini Dasas and try to line up and compare them based on a list of important events in their lives that manifested already in different areas of life. Let us know how it goes. Rectifications are fun!!!
