There is a lot of good stuff going on in this discussion but the one thing I want to add at the moment is that Jaimini and Parashara do not tell us a single thing about where to start the cirlce. yes, Parashara says, saturn is DB in Aries, but he does not tell us where aries is located on the cirlce. Neither does Jaimini. The only astrologer who tells us this is Varahamihira who in his astronomy book, panchasiddhantika, says that Aries starts at the vernal equinox. Varahamihiri is the most highly regarded astrologer of India not being credited as a Rishi, but still the use sidereal in India. Varaha mihiri was very influenced by the astronomy of the Yavanas, the greeks. He quotes Yavanna Jataka regularly. He never spoke of the Adityas.
Surya Siddhanta, the astronomy book, says that the solar month of aries starts at the vernal equinox. The legend behind that book is that it was given by an Asura from Romaka which would have been off the coast of Egypt according to the location given in Surya Siddhanta. Surya Siddanta makes no mention of the Adityas.
There is obvious western influence into the astrology of India. In the end, its all a grey area were the more one studies, the more one realizes that the answers is not in the old texts. My approach is that the answers have to be in the astronomy and if they are not, we may as well just quite astrology and find a more sensible hobby or profession.
Romaka which would have been off the coast of Egypt according to the location given in Surya Siddhanta.
I thought it would have been off the western coast of Africa right on the equator?
