Within Western astrology, the 12th is often associated with somewhat closed institutions (prisons, hospitals, monasteries, etc.) Is this also the case in Vedic astrology. I'm particularly interested in monasteries.

Yes, we still have those significations. One that's probably different is that we also consider the bed from here - hidden bed pleasures. That wasn't available when I was studying Western astrology, which I have found to be very helpful to know especially when looking for the possibility of affairs and things like that.

I was asking about monasteries and convents because I am considering joining one myself. I have no planets in the 12th though. Only Chiron is there.
The ruler of the Venus, is in the 9th though, which is an important house in my chart because Mercury (= the lagna lord) is there, as well as the 10th house cusp.
I guess that pulls the meanings of the 12th house straight into the highlighted 9th house.
It's crazy how one's chart becomes more clear with every year that passes...!
Pluto is currently transiting, back and forth over that Venus (= 12th house ruler). Maybe that's why the convent theme is arising around this time.
@carolinedepuydt 50 % chance that you have the same as me, that is if you are a Gemini and not a Virgo lagna. I´m a Gemini lagna with Venus in the 9th. Which in the new aditya system makes it exalted; whether you are into that or not I really recommend you to watch a video Ernst´s published the other day in the Adityas course about Me/Ve working together. That video, in my opinion, is nothing short of brilliant.
In short: Mercury has low ucca close to it´s DB sign, which means that we stir up a lot of things in our attempt to find out the right way. But doing that we learn a lot, and make even find new ways, valuable for everyone!
And at the same time Venus will have high ucca, especially if exalted, which helps you immensly to make good decisions, based on what´s best for you.
The 12th house is often related to ashrams, I guess a monastery is basically the same. Also vacations, and even foreign country or a foreigner.

@staffan Hi Staffan, yes, I have Gemini rising. Correct. So Venus is exalted?? Interesting. But surprising, given that relationships never work out, they barely get off the ground. All the men I meet turn out to be unavailable, in one way or another. (I used to think there was something "wrong" with me, until I realised, recently, that maybe the reason I am unavailable too - there has to be a mirror there - is because I'm just not meant to be part of a family unit, but destined for a religious life away from society)
Of course one should not just look at Venus for relationships, but it's part of the picture, right? I have Neptune and Uranus in the 7th, with Neptune right on the Descendant point, bhava cusp you would call it. There has definitely been deception (Neptune) and sudden ruptures (Uranus). There have also been many visionary, brilliant, mystical partners. It never lasts but it's always an interesting ride!
The ruler, Jupiter, is in the 6th, in scorpio, with the Moon, who is decreasing badly. If one looks at parts/lots, then Lot of Nemesis (the saturn lot) is right on top of the 7th bava point cusp/descendant, and lot of marriage/relationships, is right on top of Pars Fortuna, in the 11th, in aries. So the men I do meet, the relationships I did have, definitely always impacted my fate. They lead me to a new job, a big new insight that made me course correct, etc.
As for the significance of that exalted Venus, outside of the relationship realm. There's cars, right, and bodily strength, muscle mass, and wealth/luxuries/the good life. My parents gave me a car, last year, and a huge house. (I am no longer working due to health issues so they took pity on me). I am currently in a Venus/Moon phase. The bodily strength and muscle mass part still needs to play out.. Would love to see that! Thanks for your input.
It can only be helpful for the 9th, for my religious aspirations, if that Venus is exalted. By the way, there is mutual reception between that Venus in the 9th, and Saturn in the 5th. (Saturn, Mars and Pluto are in libra, in the 5th)
For ashrams, monasteries, we want a connection between 11 (groups, collectivities) and 12.
In Tropical, Mars 11 lord joining Saturn, becomes part of your auspicious parivartana exchange 5-9.
In Adityas, Venus and Mercury are 11 and 12 lords.
So in both cases you have 11 and 12 connected.
@carolinedepuydt Yes, but Venus is above all, according to Ernst and my understanding of him, the planet that helps us to make healthy choices. I´ve already said it, by I say it again: your Mercury close to it´s exaltation point is going to stir everything up (on the planning state), but your Venus will help you to make healthy choices. Now, if there are bad influences to it, that capacity diminishes, of course.
