Hello @ernst and fellow astrologers. Question: 9th house has to do with foreign travel/long distance travel, whereas third house has to do more with short travels from what I currently understand, but could foreign travels or far off lands/long distance travel include traveling to different states, such as you live in California and drive/fly to New Hampshire, for example? Would that be considered 9th house traveling? I guess what I mean is if you are traveling inside the U.S, it is not a foreign land, such as traveling to India from the United States, but could traveling to another state within the United Sates be considered a foreign land and therefore considered under 9th house travel? I would assume it would be considered under foreign travel of the 9th house, but just wanted to get some input to be sure.

7th house is foreign travel. 3rd house is travel within one's own country. 9th house is heavily used for travel in western astrology and its slipped into vedic astrology but it has no relevance in travel in the vedic astrology texts outside of pilgramages. many vedic astrologers are taught to use 12th house as foreign travel but its not correct, 12th is just vacations which often have a travel aspect. Cancer is the rasi of foreign travel and rahu the planet.
@ernst Thanks for clearing that up. Now that you refreshed my memory, I do remember learning that the 7th house was foreign travel. Yes, I do hear it mentioned a lot in western that the 9th is foreign travel. This is where the confusion came in. And a lot of vedic astrologers say it too, but do not point out that it is for pilgrimage.
