Hi Ernst and all,

I was going through BPHS and I came across the chapter on special ascendants. While Parashara gives sutras for calculation of special ascendants like Bhava Lagna, Hora Lagna, Ghatika Lagna, Pranapada, etc., I really haven't found enough resource elaborating why such ascendants are supposed to be used, and the indications of those ascendants.

I'd be more than pleased if I were to understand the use of such ascendants in a more elaborate and comprehensive manner.

This is a really fascinating topic and one of the lessons that was more notable for me.  I still have ideas about the deeper significance of these.

You'll find Ernst teaching these in his Jaimini Sutras audio course Pada 3.  If you already have the text it is Sutra 1 Pada 3, sloka 24-27.  In the manual Ernst includes the passages from BPHS on this topic so it's quite nice to have both to work with.

Not sure which lecture but this discussion is called Jaimini Raja Yogas and it comes right after Argala.  Ernst follows the sequence of the manual so you can listen to the beginning of the recordings and see where he's at.

He also goes into this a bit in the Muhurta course but not as in depth (if I recall rightly) as the jaimini audio course

@ernst,

Can you elaborate on how the time based lagnas (Hora, Bhava and Ghatika) can be used other than the Jaimini yogodas?

Thanks.

Bava lagna a time lagna not a space lagna and it is the earth lagna and it's the same on all places on earth at the same moment of time. WHEN calculated properly from Yamakoti.

So we can read the chart from it just as normal as a foundation chart.

HOra and Ghatika lagnas essentially take the time lagna in respect to the hora chart cast in the Parivritti method and ghatika lagna takes the panchamsa time lagna. But then both of these are read in the rasi chart. I am not sure if these have any use other than the raja yogas.

All three of these are time based gates that planets can manifest through when aspecting or joining and so they are capable of forming the jaimin raja yogas which simply show what planets can really show themselves.

@ernst

Seems to me that both the Parivritti way of calculating some of the vargas and the other way for the vargas such as the D3 and D10 are all valid? I mean, it is just different ways of mathematically dividing the Rasi chart.

@ernst I've come across few Indian astrologers who used HL and GL to deduce wealth and calculate longevity of one's life. I wonder if they've ever managed to share those techniques publicly, but I find it interesting that those Lagnas can be used for predicting other matters of life as well.
