Hey Ernst,
I just wanted to make sure I understood the typical proportions/ratios of the three zones correctly - I have attached a visualization.
The simplest way for me to understand it is with a mathematical formula, so if the total height of "a" is 1cm, then the total heigh of "t" is 1.5cm, while the total height of "y" is 2cm. Did I get it right?
Many thanks,
Nadya
Nice clarification, we´ll see what Ernst says.
Personally I´m a bit confused by the height of "t", since I was taught as a kid - Swedish school in the 70s - that the "t" was only half as high as the rest of the high letters. And that is as I still write it. But I guess that´s not the norm then?
Staffan
y would be 3cm. The bottom portion would be 2cm or 2x as long as the middle portion.
@staffan Yeah, I haven't seen anyone with t half as high as others. It's a swedish cultural rule ?
I have seen some creativity in where people cross the t, its shape and the length of the t-bar, but not with the size of t stem (vertical height).
@jam1 I don´t know, it was just how I was taught, maybe it was only during a short time? No idea.

Yes, as I mentioned in the course different countries will teach handwriting a certain way and it seems Sweden wanted shorter T. In respect to t what I was saying is that when letters get high, that's the most common one to have really high.
For proportions, t, h, d, etc would be 1.5cm and y, j, g etc would be 3cm. That would be the average norm. So the lower of the y j, g types is double the height of the middle row. The t, d, h types are 1.5 times the middle row for the TOTAL height.
