I was curious as to why Mercury is debilitated in the sign of Jupiter since both are knowledge, but different. Mercury MT n exaltation are both in Virgo. Mercury is debilitated in Pisces. Virgo is the Tamasic sign so when there is problem Mercury comes in to negotiate. Mercury is also a manager, a communicator.  From MT to exaltation it is the 1st Houses so Mercury in Virgo very much knows what it wants to say and clear. The difference between Mercury in Virgo vs Mercury in Gemini is Mercury in Gemini likes to plan things out ahead whereas, Mercury in Virgo will deal with problems when they are confronted. Mercury is debilitated in Pisces. Pisces is a Sattva sign. Mercury's job is not to envision the best possible future that could happen. Its job is to solve the current problem in front of its face. We don't want Mercury in Sattva Jupiter sign. Mercury can't be idealistic. Mercury needs to be a negotiator, practical to overcome the current obstacle. Jupiter is very idealistic

From Mercury MT to Pisces, Mercury is in the 7th House. So instead of identifying with "self" like Virgo where Mercury is exalted, in Pisces Mercury is identifying with others, 7th House. Mercury in Pisces rambles, is not paying attention to what it is saying, but it is paying attention to what others are saying. So it is not clear about what it wants in negotiating. It is giving things away. I think Ernst once said Mercury in Virgo never pays retail because it knows how to negotiate. Mercury in Pisces always buys at retail and when Mercury in Pisces sells, it sells below retail. In Shad Bala, Mercury is strongest in the 1st house and weakest in the 7th.

Jupiter is the main Karaka for D-20 Vimsamsa which is devotion

@tuyetv Very good summary.

I have Mercury in the 7th, and yes... Confirmed. A low Dig Bala Mercury is a true blemish to a chart. Such a waste of energy and it´s hard to be respected since you tend to give everything away for free.

I just come the realization what the Pada really means, and I have it in Pisces. So I´m becoming, in a way, a Pisces. Being a Gemini lagna, having my Sun and Mercury in Sag and the Moon in Virgo... Hopping around there between the dual signs / the Mercury/Jupiter signs /; I can truly relate to what you describe.

@tuyetv I also know the opposite very well. My youngest kid has Me in his Lagna, and from a very young age he has asked for things with a natural strength that is hard to resist. Of course as parents we have had to say no many times, his mother and I, and in this case I´m glad that I have King of Hearts on my EC, the father card, giving my access to some tough love you. He´s a 5D whose EC is 2S, so in most cases his cravings haven´t been unreasonable. But still, the force that he has when wanting something - it´s notable. And it´s because his wish is alined with his needs, mostly, of course.

My young adult niece has both mercury n jupiter in her 1st house. Very good placement She is a go getter n knows what she wants. Very clear in her communication. She wants to attend law school (another attorney as if we don’t have enough!) she has some tough yogas n planetary placements. So we will see how life will flow for her…
