Gosh, this is something I´ve must have heard Ernst commenting many times but that I haven´t given any attention:
For the Moon we look at the astronomical state for to see whether it´s waxing or waning, right? Which means it stays the same throughout all the vargas, independent of the relation between Mo/Su in the Varga?

just like temporary friendships
As I understand it, Ernst suggests to calculate temporary friendship in the vargas based on the rashi chart. The natural relationship in a varga is based on the sign (i.e., the amsha) that the planet is in. But the temporary friendship is astronomical, just like the waning or waxing of the moon, so yes do as you suggested, then the moon has only one state in the rashi and vargas together...just like you can do with the temporary friendship.
