Hi Ernst en all,

I see that Kala gives Jaimini yogas in the D1 by using the Svamsa rasi from the D9. I sure I remember in Jaimini course you were reading from the AK in the D1. Which is the correct technique?

Thanks.

You can read from both the Svamsa and the Karaka. In Kala only the effects of Svamsa is programmed in to give a text indication.

This is Ernst's answer to one of the homework questions on the Jaimini course:

Homework 6

5) In homework 6 Chart, judge the courage and make sure to use the appropriate varga as well as the navamsa.

The 3rd from the Atmakaraka in the Navamsa is Aquarous, with no planets. In the drikkana the 3rd is Gemini holding Ketu, a malefic, in the Rasi the 3rd from the sun is also holding Ketu. As a result these 2 good placements and no benefics in the 3rd, this person is very up front, courageous and always manages to get things to happen the way that he wants.

As can see he is using the 3rd from the AK in the D1(which is Leo) he's not looking at the 3rd from Aquarius. There is no example of him ever using the Svamsa from the D9 in the D1. Determining career if you used the AK and Svamsa in the D1 would be a mess.

In your example, Ernst is clearly reading from the Atmakaraka and Sun, two self factors in three different vargas. At the same time, Ernst writes regarding JUS 1.2.14-38

"After giving the effects of the different Navamsa Rasis in respect to the Svamsa, Jaimini proceeds to tell us the effects of the Grahas as determined from the Svamsa position. With this there is another point of controversy. There are basically two schools of thought: one has it that the Grahas in the Navamsa are read from the Svamsa; the other has it that the Grahas in the Rasi are read from the Svamsa. I prefer to read from the Svamsa in the Navamsa. Additionally, all the effects related to the Svamsa, hold true in all vargas, though the navamsa position is the most important for the fulfillment of the individual’s destiny."

Given that quote, I always "assumed" that Ernst programmed from the Svamsa in the Rasi as a tool for the many people who give that view primacy over the Svamsa in the Navamsa. I find it illuminating to read both and weigh confluence and conflicting indications. He did say that effects related to the Svamsa hold true in all vargas. Personally, I use the Svamsa in the Navamsa as the baseline.

Hope that helps,

John

Thanks for explaining. Ernst doesn't give any example of reading the Svamsa in other vargas that I can remember. If you consider that the same effects from the Svamsa can be read from the Pada and Upapada and the AK. That means in other vargas you have 4 points to read from which makes the system quite difficult.

You are welcome. I don't recall Ernst giving examples of reading the Svamsa in other vargas either. All his examples reflected what Jaimini wrote in his Sutras. This is basically that the Svamsa is defined as the rasi in the Navamsa, hosting the AK and read from that rasi, odd or even, forward or reverse according to the rule not sometimes. I would certainly give the most weight to what Jaimini actually wrote in his Sutras. While I believe the statement, "effects related to the Svamsa hold true in all vargas" is valid, we need to be careful not to go down a "rabbit hole" in over extending a technique. For example, If we take the determinations from the "self portion" Svamsa and find confluence with the determinations from "self path" D1, probability is on our side that the confluent determinations from the Svamsa in Navamsa is a valid prediction. How easy is that? Have fun with it because the Jaimini techniques are generally as golden as they get. If you drill the shodasa vargas through all the signs and chara karakas by conjunction and rasi aspect, you will be well on your way to reading "from" with ease. I prefer the south indian chart for this as the fixed spatial placements make things, with a bit of practice, easier to see at a glance. It's a great adventure.
