My two cents: The amount of pain we experience through others highlights how strongly we think and feel certain things about ourselves. We can only be hurt when there's already a certain pattern in place. For me, the only way to overcome such pain is through self-compassion and loving understanding of our own wounds.
I do believe that we come together due to our past karmic debts. We come together to finish that obligation in this life time. Certain people become our parents, our siblings, our spouses and so on. Certain people hurt us for no reasons because perhaps in the previous life time we have hurt them. If we continue to attract certain types of people then we need to ask ourselves why we continue to allow them to hurt us. It is time to look deep into our soul to heal, to let go so we don’t repeat the pattern n move forward. We are programmed to behave a certain way n now we have to reprogram that subconsciousness to change our behaviors so we stop repeating the unhealthy pattern of thinking…Easier said than done

Yes, A LOT of this is about survival, and that means, the survival of the fittest. My father was traumatized as a young boy growing up in Germany during WWII. As a result, his entire life was based on being the strong, the dominant, the fittest, the smartest in order to feel that he would survive.
I saw my dad getting lots of troubles from others, not being liked and so having great struggles in life. I recognized that not being liked is dangerous, so to insure my survival I became a person who always found a way to be helpful, liked appreciated by others. Both these behaviors were pathological. Both actions are taken to insure some aspect of what humans need to survive and both actions taken alone will eventually take us to the brink of disaster. The truth is, we need to be strong to survive, and we need to be useful and appreciated by others to survive.
That's such a wonderful message.
In your example you were only able to get so close to the lion by purchasing a ticket to his show. This reminds me of Leo svamsa and an afflicted sun leading to mishaps with wildlife. A good sun can go through karmic events and still have self esteem because the light is coming from within.
